KOREA AND THE KOREAN PEOPLE The Land and the People Korea is a peninsula bordering on Manchuria and Rusia to the north, facing China to the West across the Yellow Sea and Japan to the east and south across the Sea of Japan and the Korea Straits. This peninsula, together with its adjacent islands, covers an area of 221,362 square kilometers. Although historically one country Korea has been divided into two halves since the end of World War II in 1945. The Republic of Korea in the south covers 99,221 square kilometers, making the nation a little more than twice the size of Switzerland. The eastern part of the peninsula is mountainous with several towering mountain ranges and virtually no coastal plain. On the other hand the western part has most of the large rivers and richer alluvial lands. Korea enjoys a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. JEET KUNE DO HISTORY Jeet Kune Do translated, as "Way of the Intercepting Fist" was Bruce Lee's personal expression of the martial arts. It is not bound by any one system nor is it meant to be a system. It is a philosophy and an ongoing process of self-discovery. This is not to say that there is no structure to JKD. Most Martial Artists who practice JKD have prior study of other martial arts systems. Bruce Lee himself studied Wing Chun for 5 years. After an infamous fight Bruce had with another martial arts master that he beat; he thought that the fight took too long and that Wing Chun had it's limitations. It is then that Bruce Lee formed a set system of progression called "Jun Fan Gung Fu". Jun Fan being Bruce Lee's Chinese name. China Out to Dominate and Attempts to Claim Taekwondo

BEIJING _ Concern is rising among Korean officials that China might try to assert taekwondo as its own homegrown sport. Ko Eui-min, chairman of the World Taekwondo Federation Technical Committee, said, ``China is doubted to have been adopting its Northeast Asia Project in taekwondo.'' Northeast Asia Project is an attempt to distort ancient Korean history in the northeastern territory of what is now China, including the Koguryo Kingdom (37 B.C.-A.D. 668) and the Palhae Kingdom (698-926). ``I was really upset to hear that the broadcaster at Changping Stadium in Beijing said taekwondo is a Chinese martial art, during the 2007 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Championships,'' he said. On the first day of the biennial competition, he introduced taekwondo, saying, ``Taekwondo originated from Korea, combining Japanese and Chinese martial arts.''
